US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will hold a meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar in Washington today at 3:15pm local time, according to the official schedule released by the State Department and reported by Al Jazeera. The talks come at a critical moment as the war in Gaza intensifies and diplomatic pressure on Israel and the United States continues to grow.

The meeting is expected to focus on the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza, where months of Israeli bombardment and blockade have devastated civilian infrastructure and pushed millions to the brink of starvation. Washington has faced mounting criticism for its continued military and political backing of Israel, even as international agencies warn of famine and mass displacement inside the enclave. Rubio is expected to press Israel on humanitarian access, while also reaffirming Washington’s security commitments to its key ally.

The scheduled talks coincide with preparations for a high-level discussion at the White House. US President Donald Trump is set to chair what his envoy, Steve Witkoff, described as a “large meeting” on Gaza later in the day. The session will bring together senior national security and foreign policy officials to review the situation on the ground and assess possible steps to address both the humanitarian and geopolitical fallout.

For Israel, Saar’s visit underscores the importance of maintaining close coordination with Washington at a time of heightened international scrutiny. For the United States, it reflects a delicate balancing act—seeking to reassure its ally while facing growing calls from the United Nations, humanitarian groups, and even some domestic voices to do more to stop the suffering in Gaza. The outcomes of these discussions could shape not only the immediate response to the crisis but also the broader trajectory of US–Israel relations in the months ahead.
