Just two months after its streaming debut, “KPop Demon Hunters” has dethroned the 2021 blockbuster “Red Notice” as Netflix’s most-watched film of all time. The animated movie, which follows K-pop idols leading double lives as both global superstars and demon slayers, has amassed more than 236 million views, surpassing Red Notice’s 230.9 million, according to figures released Wednesday.

Netflix celebrated the milestone in a post declaring: “Their #1 era. With 236 million views, ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ is officially the most popular Netflix film of all time.” The film’s meteoric success also comes on the heels of its limited “sing-along” theatrical release, which topped the US box office earlier this month. In July, it was already named the platform’s most-streamed animated film ever.

The soundtrack has further fueled its popularity, led by the global hit “Golden” and supported by other charting singles such as “Soda Pop,” “Your Idol,” “Takedown,” “How It’s Done,” “Free,” and “What It Sounds Like.” Several tracks have made strong showings on the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Official Singles Chart, cementing the film’s cultural impact beyond the screen.

Amid its runaway success, talks are underway for a possible sequel. Sony Pictures is reportedly in advanced discussions with Netflix about developing a follow-up, with negotiations described as “smooth” due to the strong partnership between Sony Animation and the streaming giant. Netflix’s head of film, Dan Lin, praised co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, along with Sony Animation president Kristine Belson and her team, though both companies have yet to confirm whether a sequel is officially greenlit.

The star-studded voice cast features Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Yunjin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Lee Byung-hun, while musical performances were provided by artists including Ejae, Andrew Choi, Audrey Nuna, Rei Ami, Samuil Lee, Kevin Woo, Neckwav, and Danny Chung, who voiced the fictional idol groups Huntr/x (Huntrix) and Saja Boys.
