Romania, Poland Scramble Jets as Russian Drone Strikes Edge Toward NATO Borders

Amid intensifying Russian drone strikes on Ukraine’s border regions, NATO members Romania and Poland scrambled fighter jets and heightened air surveillance to prevent any spillover into their territories. Romania’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that two F-16 fighter aircraft were dispatched after detecting unauthorized drone activity near its airspace, while Ukraine faced a large-scale Russian attack on its critical infrastructure.

Similarly, Poland raised its air defense alert level in response to Russian drone activity near its eastern frontier. Polish and allied aircraft, including reconnaissance and combat-ready units, were mobilized to monitor potential incursions. Although Prime Minister Donald Tusk later confirmed the high alert status had been lifted, he emphasized the need for continued vigilance, warning of growing Russian provocations along NATO’s eastern flank.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of deliberately escalating drone operations near NATO borders, calling on Western nations to intensify sanctions and enhance military support. The recent incidents underscore rising tensions in Eastern Europe and highlight the strategic risk of conflict spillover into NATO territory—raising broader questions about alliance readiness and the evolving nature of hybrid warfare in the region.
