SEOUL – Blackpink emerged as one of the biggest winners at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), held Sunday in New York City, with the group and its members securing major accolades that highlighted their global dominance.
Rosé made history by becoming the first K-pop artist to win Song of the Year with her 2024 chart-topping hit “APT.”, a collaboration with Bruno Mars. The milestone surpassed even BTS, which has never claimed the prestigious award despite its worldwide acclaim. In her emotional acceptance speech, Rosé thanked Bruno Mars, producer Teddy Park, her Blackpink bandmates, and dedicated the trophy to her younger self and fans who have followed her journey.
Although she was nominated in seven other categories, including Video of the Year and Best Pop, Rosé’s solo victory was her only individual win of the night. Blackpink, however, shone collectively, taking home the Best Group award. The quartet triumphed over heavyweight acts such as Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, and last year’s winner Seventeen, marking their return to the category after last winning in 2023.
Lisa also added to the group’s historic night, clinching her third Best K-pop award with her solo track “Born Again”, produced alongside Doja Cat and Raye. She had previously won in 2022 with “Lalisa” and again in 2024 with “Rockstar,” cementing her place as Blackpink’s most decorated member in the category. In a video message, as she could not attend in person, Lisa thanked her collaborators, her management team, and most importantly, her fans — Lilies and Blinks.
Other Blackpink members, Jennie and Jisoo, were nominated but did not attend the event. Meanwhile, rookie girl group Katseye, formed by Hybe and Geffen Records, became the only other K-pop act to win at the VMAs, taking home MTV Push Performance of the Year.
Blackpink’s triumph comes during a short break from their Deadline world tour, which resumes in October with concerts in Taiwan, Bangkok, and Jakarta before concluding in Hong Kong in January 2026.
