In a landmark move, China will make artificial intelligence (AI) education compulsory for schoolchildren starting at age six, beginning September 1, 2025. The initiative positions China as a global pioneer in weaving advanced technologies into early education, signaling a bold step toward shaping a future-ready generation.

Under the new policy, schools across the country will embed AI-based learning modules into their core curriculum. Lessons will go beyond technical understanding, emphasizing creativity, problem-solving, and digital literacy to ensure students develop both practical and innovative skills from the start of their academic journey.

This sweeping reform aligns with Beijing’s wider ambition to cement its leadership in AI innovation and digital transformation. By fostering AI literacy at the earliest stages, China aims to build a workforce that can thrive in the competitive global digital economy.

Experts suggest the decision could reshape the global education landscape, creating pressure on other nations to follow suit. If adopted elsewhere, mandatory AI learning could accelerate the worldwide transition to AI-driven education systems, redefining how the next generation engages with technology.
