India’s Sports Ministry has declared that the country will not engage in any bilateral sporting events with Pakistan, even if hosted at neutral venues. This decision effectively prohibits Indian athletes from traveling to Pakistan and prevents Pakistani athletes from coming to India for any one-on-one sporting contests.
Despite this restriction, the ministry clarified that India will still participate in multilateral tournaments where Pakistan is also present. This means the Indian cricket team will take part in the upcoming Asia Cup, which is scheduled to be held in the United Arab Emirates. The Asia Cup is considered a multilateral event and is therefore not affected by the new policy.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have long influenced their sports relations. In the past, several bilateral series have been canceled or moved to neutral venues due to diplomatic concerns. India has consistently refused to play in Pakistan, even for ICC events, and this new policy formalizes that approach.
The key points of the policy are that bilateral matches between the two nations will not take place, but participation in global or regional events involving multiple countries, such as the Asia Cup or the World Cup, will continue. While Pakistan may still be allowed to participate in tournaments hosted by India, each case will be evaluated individually based on the political climate at the time.
India has drawn a firm line by cutting off direct sporting ties with Pakistan, though it remains open to competing in events that include other nations. The Asia Cup, as a multilateral competition, will proceed as planned with India’s full participation.
