Iran Submits New Proposal to Europe in Bid to Prevent UN Sanctions Re imposition

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Friday that Tehran has submitted what it calls a “fair, balanced and creative” nuclear proposal to European powers aimed at preventing the re imposition of United Nations sanctions. The proposal was made on Thursday to the group known as the E3 (Britain, France, Germany) and the European Union.

Araghchi said that the proposal addresses “genuine concerns” and is “mutually beneficial,” urging action to translate the plan into real steps. He argued that Iran should not be the only party held responsible. ([The Express Tribune][1]) The comments came just as the UN Security Council was set to vote on reimposing stringent economic sanctions on Iran over its contested nuclear programme.

The E3 and EU have alleged that Iran has strayed from its commitments under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)—the agreement that lifted sanctions in exchange for Iran limiting its nuclear work. Under pressure over the years, Iran has taken steps that critics say breach some of these commitments.

Diplomatic sources suggest Tehran may lack the minimum number of votes on the Security Council needed to block the sanctions snapback. The E3 launched a 30-day process at the end of August to restore UN sanctions unless Iran returns to compliance under the JCPOA framework.

The proposal from Iran is being presented as an attempt to defuse growing tension and avert a potential crisis. By offering terms intended to satisfy European demands while preserving its own interests, Iran appears to be seeking to maintain diplomatic channels open and prevent a full return of international economic restrictions.
