Lahore – The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an urgent warning as Shahdara Headworks on the Ravi River faces a “very high” flood, with outflows rising above 160,000 cusecs. Authorities caution that water levels continue to increase, posing risks to downstream areas.
According to the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) of the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the situation is more severe on other major rivers. At Qadirabad Headworks on the Chenab, outflows crossed 900,000 cusecs, marking an “exceptionally high flood,” though a gradual falling trend has been observed. Similarly, at Khanki Headworks, the Chenab was flowing close to 800,000 cusecs, still within an exceptionally high range.
The Sutlej River at Ganda Singh Wala was also reported to be in “exceptionally high flood” condition, adding to concerns of widespread inundation across Punjab. On the Ravi, both Jassar and Balloki Headworks were under “high flood” alerts, with water levels showing steady and rising patterns, respectively.
Flood management authorities warn that continuous high and exceptionally high flows in the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej could overwhelm embankments, damage standing crops, and endanger vulnerable riverine communities. Residents in low-lying areas have been urged to remain alert and follow evacuation advisories to minimize risks as monsoon inflows persist.
