Washington: President Donald Trump has sharply criticized British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for refusing to support Washington’s military actions against Iran, warning that the historic “special relationship” between the US and UK is under strain.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said Starmer “has not been helpful…I never thought I’d see that. I never thought I’d see that from the UK,” expressing surprise at the UK’s reluctance to align with the United States on Middle East military operations.
The former president suggested that ties between the two nations have shifted dramatically. “It’s a different world, actually. It’s just a much different kind of relationship that we’ve had with your country before,” Trump added, emphasizing a perceived erosion of the traditional alliance.
Trump characterized the once-strong transatlantic bond as previously “the most solid of all” alliances, noting that its current state represents an unexpected and concerning development.
Despite the criticism, he indicated that Washington is less reliant on Britain than in the past to prosecute military campaigns in the Middle East. “It’s not going to matter, but [Starmer] should have helped… he should have,” Trump said, underscoring his belief that the UK could have played a more supportive role.
