Floods and Landslides Strike Northern India Amid Heavy Rains

NEW DELHI – Heavy monsoon rains have unleashed widespread flooding across northern India, triggering landslides, washed-out roads, and swollen rivers. In the capital, the Yamuna River surged over its danger mark, prompting the evacuation of around 10,000 residents from low-lying areas along its banks.

Regions including Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and the Delhi-NCR area have been severely impacted. The deluge has disrupted daily life, destroyed infrastructure, and taken lives across the region.

In Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, landslides fueled by torrential rain have blocked mountain roads and disconnected remote communities. In Mandi (Himachal Pradesh), several fatalities have been reported, while in Rajouri (J&K), a wall collapse tragically killed a mother and her daughter.

Across Punjab, more than 30 deaths have been recorded with over 20,000 people evacuated since August. The floods have devastated agricultural land, destroying up to 150,000 hectares of crops and triggering mass evacuations in multiple districts.

Authorities have deployed emergency personnel and resources to mitigate the disaster. Rescue operations involving the army, NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), and local teams are underway, working tirelessly to clear roads and provide relief. Weather warnings remain in effect as more heavy rain is forecasted.
