NEW YORK: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a new push to achieve a ceasefire and lasting peace in Gaza, calling it a significant step at a critical moment in the conflict.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Guterres praised the initiative and emphasized that it aligns with the urgent need to reduce violence and bring relief to civilians who continue to bear the brunt of the fighting. He also acknowledged the key role played by Arab and Muslim countries in advancing mediation efforts, describing their contributions as vital to any meaningful peace process.
The Secretary-General underlined that the next stage requires concrete commitment from all sides to not only reach an agreement but also ensure its effective implementation. “It is crucial that all parties commit themselves fully to the terms of any ceasefire,” he said, stressing that half-measures would not be sufficient to end the cycle of violence.
Guterres reiterated several core demands that the United Nations has consistently raised since the escalation began. These include the establishment of an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the guarantee of unhindered humanitarian access throughout Gaza, and the unconditional release of all hostages. According to the UN chief, these measures are essential to alleviate the “tremendous human suffering” in the region.
Looking ahead, Guterres said he hopes the current momentum could pave the way for renewed diplomatic engagement toward a two-state solution, which the United Nations views as the only viable path to a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. He emphasized that short-term ceasefire arrangements should be seen as a stepping stone to broader political solutions, not as an end in themselves.
The Secretary-General reaffirmed the UN’s steadfast commitment to supporting all credible peace initiatives, promising that the organization will continue to work with international and regional actors to create conditions for stability and security. “The United Nations remains resolute in promoting peace, stability, and a more hopeful future for the peoples of Palestine, Israel, and the wider region,” he concluded.
