U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that he wants to see capable individuals in power in Iran who can effectively govern the country. Speaking to reporters, Trump emphasized the importance of competent leadership, saying, “Ideally, we would like to see somebody in there that knows what they’re doing. In other words, they can build a country.”

In an interview with ABC News on March 8, Trump elaborated on his position regarding Iran’s future leadership. He suggested that the next supreme leader of Iran would need approval from the United States if they wish “to last long,” signaling a potential U.S. influence over Tehran’s political succession following recent military operations.

The remarks come in the aftermath of a joint U.S.–Israeli military campaign against Iran launched on February 28. The strikes targeted major Iranian cities, including Tehran, and were justified by the White House as a response to alleged missile and nuclear threats posed by Iran. The attacks also resulted in significant casualties among Iran’s top leadership, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other senior officials.

In retaliation, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced its own military operations targeting Israeli sites. The escalation has also impacted U.S. military installations across the Gulf, with bases in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates reportedly coming under threat.

Trump’s comments reflect a broader U.S. policy approach that emphasizes the importance of political stability and “competent” governance in Tehran, particularly in the wake of unprecedented military escalation in the region. Analysts say the remarks also underscore Washington’s ongoing efforts to influence Iran’s internal political landscape amid ongoing hostilities and retaliatory strikes.
