The international community has welcomed Hamas’s recent statement indicating openness to key elements of US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan, seeing it as a potentially pivotal step toward ending the devastating conflict.
According to Al Jazeera, several countries and institutions expressed cautious optimism after Hamas announced its readiness to release Israeli captives and transfer administrative control of Gaza to a government of Palestinian technocrats.
Qatar’s foreign ministry issued a statement praising Hamas’s stance, noting that it aligns with Trump’s call for an immediate halt to Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Doha emphasised that the group’s willingness to compromise creates “a genuine opportunity for peace” and urged Israel to cease its attacks to allow progress in negotiations.
Egypt also welcomed the move, describing Trump’s framework as a “realistic political vision” capable of paving the way for regional stability. Cairo expressed hope that this development would encourage all stakeholders to demonstrate the necessary responsibility to end the ongoing offensive and move toward a sustainable settlement.
Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was “encouraged” by Hamas’s response. In remarks shared with reporters, he urged all parties to “seize the opportunity before us” and stressed that the focus must now shift toward a permanent ceasefire, humanitarian access, and a long-term political solution based on the two-state framework.
The coordinated responses from the UN, Qatar, and Egypt highlight growing international pressure on both Israel and Hamas to capitalize on the latest opening for diplomacy. Analysts say the coming days will be crucial in determining whether the momentum translates into concrete steps toward de-escalation, or whether the fragile opportunity will be overtaken by continuing violence on the ground.
