BEIJING — Chinese artificial intelligence startup Unicorn Z.ai has announced it is adapting its AI models to run on Huawei’s homegrown processors, a move aimed at strengthening China’s domestic AI ecosystem and reducing reliance on foreign hardware.

The company said the initiative will optimize performance on Huawei’s Ascend series chips, which are increasingly being used in China’s data centers and AI research projects. By ensuring compatibility, Unicorn Z.ai hopes to make its models more accessible to Chinese enterprises and government agencies operating within a domestic tech stack.

The development comes amid heightened U.S.-China tech tensions and restrictions on advanced semiconductor exports to China. Industry analysts say the collaboration could help bolster China’s push for technological self-sufficiency in AI and cloud computing.

“Supporting Huawei’s chips is not just a business decision — it’s a step toward building a more resilient and independent AI infrastructure in China,” a Unicorn Z.ai spokesperson said.

The company plans to roll out its Huawei-optimized AI models to partners later this year, with applications spanning natural language processing, computer vision, and industry-specific AI solutions.
