A cargo vessel was struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire onboard, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported on Wednesday. The incident occurred approximately eleven nautical miles north of Oman, highlighting ongoing security risks in one of the world’s most strategic shipping lanes.

According to UKMTO, the impacted vessel immediately requested assistance, and the crew began evacuating the ship as emergency measures were taken to contain the fire. The agency did not specify the type of projectile involved, and investigations are currently ongoing to determine the circumstances behind the attack.

Authorities have issued a caution to maritime traffic in the area. UKMTO advised vessels to transit with extreme care and to promptly report any suspicious activity while the investigation continues. The advisory underscores the heightened threat level for commercial shipping amid ongoing regional tensions.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical chokepoint for global energy and cargo shipments, with significant volumes of oil and goods passing through daily. Incidents such as this one exacerbate concerns over maritime security and the potential impact on international trade and shipping insurance.

UKMTO’s warning comes amid a series of recent attacks on commercial vessels in the region, signaling a persistent risk to maritime operations and emphasizing the strategic vulnerability of the strait to both accidental and deliberate incidents.
