Israel Conducts New Airstrikes on Lebanon

Israeli forces launched new airstrikes on southern Lebanon on Thursday, targeting Hezbollah weapons storage facilities, the Israeli military said, just a day after Lebanese and Israeli civilian representatives held their first direct talks in decades. The attacks highlight the fragility of the November 2024 ceasefire, which was intended to end more than a year of hostilities between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group.

Despite the ceasefire, Israel has maintained a military presence in five strategically significant areas in southern Lebanon and has continued airstrikes against suspected Hezbollah targets. The renewed operations came immediately after a brief lull in violence during Pope Leo XIV’s visit from Sunday to Tuesday, during which the pontiff called for an end to hostilities.

The Israeli army announced that it “began conducting strikes on Hezbollah terror targets in southern Lebanon,” specifically warning that buildings in Mahrouna and Jbaa would be hit. Later, the military issued additional warnings about strikes on Hezbollah “military infrastructure” in Majadal and Baraasheet, also in southern Lebanon.

Analysts say the latest strikes underscore ongoing tensions in the region, as both Israel and Hezbollah remain on alert despite diplomatic efforts to stabilize relations. The recent civilian talks, held under the UN’s peacekeeping mechanism, marked a historic step in dialogue but have yet to significantly curb military confrontations on the ground.

The strikes also raise concerns about potential escalation, as southern Lebanon has long been a flashpoint for clashes between Israel and Hezbollah. Civilian populations in the region continue to face the risk of collateral damage, even as international mediators seek to maintain a fragile peace.

Observers note that while the ceasefire framework aims to prevent large-scale conflict, the continuation of Israeli strikes and Hezbollah’s armed presence suggests that underlying tensions remain unresolved, leaving the area vulnerable to further violence.
